How To Quit Your Accountant
We are fixers here at Fix-It Accounting, just as our name suggests. We help our clients fix various problems, but one of the most common issues we confront is clients who need help solving the big issues left behind by their former accountants or bookkeepers. Accounting is like any other career, there are good ones and there are not-so-good ones. And, even the people with the best intentions may not be the best option for your business.
It can be difficult to end any kind of relationship, but especially a professional relationship with someone who holds the keys to your financial life. However, poor accounting can do damage to your finances more quickly than you realize. It’s important to surround yourself with professionals who lift you toward success (whether they’re your accountant or a full-time member of your team). Even harder than leaving your accountant is finding a new one. Below are three of the factors we think are essential when choosing the right firm.
Your Relationship is Important
When hiring an accountant, you must work with someone with whom you can have a good relationship. You don't need to be best friends, but you need to have a good rapport, mutual trust and respect, and an open line of communication. The responsibility to communicate openly rests on both the accountant and the client, so make sure you share all pertinent information.
Owning Your Data is Crucial
You should have access to your financial information if and when you need it. When you read the fine print, you may be surprised to find that some accountants and bookkeepers “own” the financial records they prepare for you, making it very difficult for you to leave. In my office, we use QuickBooks Online and ensure that every one of our clients has direct access to their data every step of the way. If they part ways with us, they maintain all of their records.
Working With a Team
One of the best things my accounting firm brings to the table is the depth and breadth of our experience. Each member of our team has worked in multiple industries before coming together at Fix-It. Because of our vast body of knowledge, we are able to confidently handle questions that arise and draw on the members of our team to shed light on new or unique issues. There are a lot of excellent accountants in the world who work alone and are very successful. However, each of them is limited in their ability to problem solve because they are limited in their experience.
