Balancing Life As A Business Owner

In this day in time, the expectations put on parents - especially mothers, is higher than ever. You’re expected to cater to your family’s every need while growing a thriving business, maintaining rock hard abs, and giving back to your community like you’re Mother Teresa. It’s not to say that any of these things are bad, but that it’s impossible to do them all perfectly all the time. Life, after all, is best lived in a state of balance. So how does one balance life as a business owner and manage to stay sane in the process? Here are some helpful tips.

1. Decide Who You Want To Be

Start by writing out a list of all of the roles that you’re playing in your life. You’re a mother, a wife, a cook, a house cleaner, an entrepreneur, an athlete, and the list goes on. We all wear multiple hats during the week, but not all of those hats are meant for us. Go through your list and determine which of those roles you’d like to prioritize and which you can let go of. For instance, if physical fitness is really important to you, you might choose: wife, mother, business owner, athlete. Obviously, this doesn’t mean that your house can go without being cleaned, or that your family can go without dinner, but that in an ideal day those things would come down lower on your list.

2. Ask For Help

Once you’ve decided what items on your list are the best use of your time, ask for help. Having trouble fitting house cleaning in with the rest of your priorities? Hire a professional! They’ll probably do a better job in less time, and leave you with more time to spend with your family. If you decide that you’d like to prioritize spending more time with your spouse, call a friend or family member and ask if they’d be willing to come over and hang out with your kids for an afternoon. Remember, no woman is an island, and you don’t have to do everything on your own. Just like you would get help in your business by delegating tasks to your team, reach out and ask for help when you need it.

3. Keep Trying

You’re not going to get it right every time, I can assure you that. Part of building a balanced life is rolling with the tide on the good days and the not so good days. But don’t let life’s little bumps throw you off balance. Remember that tomorrow is another day for you to center yourself and start all over.

You cannot be all things to all people. Let that line sink in a little bit. It’s just impossible for you to be all things to all people.
